Fresh pineapples

Like most tropical countries, fresh fruits flood the market during the hot summer months. While there are fruits that are abundant all year round, pineapples, melons, watermelons and mangoes are traditional summer harvests. There are a lot of horticulture projects aimed at making them all-season fruits but before and after summer, they are not as [...]

Ostrich chop suey

ostrich chop sueyOstrich meat is not common in the Philippines. I’m sure that cost is a significant factor. It used to sell at PhP 600.00+ per kilo and only Shopwise in Libis, Quezon City, had it. It was a surprise to find ostrich meat at the Antipolo branch of Shopwise. The price had gone down too to PhP 423.75 per kilo. Not bad since there’s hardly any wastage when cooking ostrich meat. No fat or bones to discard. And since ostrich meat cooks so fast, it doesn’t shrink so much either…

Lasang Pinoy 8: mocha latte and choco latte

Alex making mocha latteI know I’m done posting my entry for Lasang Pinoy 8 but my kids took turns making mocha latte and choco latte earlier tonight and… why waste such a wonderful story? Because it really was quite a story–I ended up drinking one tall glass of mocha latte and two short glasses of choco latte. How could I say no after all their effort, eh? Of course, after that, I swore I won’t eat a thing tomorrow.

Lemongrass cooler at Vieux Chalet

So, the graduation ceremony that was originally scheduled for Friday, March 31st and which was postponed because of the rains, took place yesterday, April 3rd. My 12-year-old will be a high school freshman in June. We obliged her by having dinner at her place of choice–Vieux Chalet Swiss Inn. Contrary to my usual practice of [...]

Beef short ribs braised in green mango jam

beef short ribs and mangoesI did this recipe last year using chicken–one of those that got deleted in the infamous database disaster last December. Chicken thighs braised in green mango jam. I couldn’t repost the chicken recipe because I really can’t remember the exact steps in making it. It was a kind of cook-as-you-go-along dish. The only thing I was sure of was using the green mango jam that I discovered at Tiendesitas last year. I decided to recreate the dish, with my usual cook-as-you-go-along procedure, but this time using beef short ribs. And because it is summer–mango season–I served the braised beef short ribs with slices of fresh ripe mangoes…
