My secret pasta sauce
June 28, 2006
I taught my daughters to eat vegetables by finely mincing boiled potatoes, carrots or kalabasa (squash) with rice and broth as soon they were old enough to eat table food. I taught them to eat fresh fruits in the same manner. So, I never really had problems feeding them vegetables. Of course, they have personal preferences too. Alex does not like talong (eggplants), for instance, and Sam hardly ever touches carrots these days although it was among her favorites as a very young child. Okay, you’re wondering what the heck all that has to do with pasta sauce. Patience… I’ll get there. ![]()

Turkey and potato salad
June 26, 2006
In the turkey lumpia entry, I mentioned that half of the turkey meat I was able to salvage went into a potato salad. This is it. Not only was I able to save the turkey meat, I was also able to finally use the fat-free Kraft mayonnaise that no one wanted to spread on sandwiches…

Chef d’Angelo
June 24, 2006
If the resolution of the photos seems a little wanting, that’s because they were taken with a phone cam. We were going to see MI 3 about a month ago and we decided to have dinner at Chef d’Angelo’s at Robinson’s Metro East. Since my husband and kids had to occupy a table to make [...]

Lengua (ox tongue) in cream and corn sauce
June 24, 2006
This dish is a variation of lengua in mushroom sauce. I have cooked this more than half a dozen times before but photographing was always a headache–it’s not easy taking photos of white subjects especially without using the flash. I suppose that my failure to take a decent photo of this dish in the past was a sort of blessing as well. See, while I used canned corn kernels before, when I cooked my ox tongue in cream and corn sauce two nights ago, I decided to use fresh corn…

Pancake House

For reasons only she knew, my 13-year-old daughter Sam had been whining about eating at Pancake House for the past month. Other than her, no one was eager to go. I think that, perhaps, a classmate recommended the place and she was really dying to try the food there. But for her dad and I [...]

Lumpiang pabo (turkey spring rolls)
June 20, 2006
From the rice-stuffed roast turkey that I cooked for my husband’s birthday dinner, I was able to salvage enough meat which, after mincing, measured about four cups. I used half to make some potato salad and I reserved the other half to make lumpiang pabo or turkey spring rolls, Chinese style…

Roast turkey with rice stuffing
June 19, 2006
I know that in the U.S. cooking turkey is both a ritual and a tradition. As a non-American, turkey elicits no feelings for me except as food. I wasn’t even a turkey eater, having a preference for duck over the years, until I discovered that turkey can be just as great if prepared properly. By that I mean making sure that the bird is seasoned through to the bone before it goes into the oven. I really don’t like my meat bland. Relying on sauces and gravies for flavor does not agree with my palate…

Birthday dinner: roast turkey, vegetable salad and peach cake
June 19, 2006
My husband celebrated his birthday last Saturday and we hosted a small dinner party. I opted to keep the menu simple since I would do the cooking alone. I decided on rice-stuffed roast turkey, a vegetable salad, baked spaghetti for the kids and a peach cake. I wish the photos looked better but I had to turn the camera flash on. I couldn’t set up the tripod since our guests had already arrived and were eager to dig in…
