Malunggay

January 17, 2007

Malunggay is Moringa oleifera Lamk, a tree with edible leaves and fruits. When I posted my halaan (clams) and malunggay soup recipe last year, there were some comments referring to the fruit of the malunggay. I have been a fan of malunggay leaves for a long, long time but I have never tried cooking nor [...]

Teriyaki Boy

January 14, 2007

Yesterday was the last day of the 2007 World Pyro Olympics. We had been planning on this one-of-a-kind photo opportunity for weeks and, having been advised by friends who have seen the previous events, we wanted to get to the Mall of Asia as early as possible. As things would have it, that just wasn’t [...]

Chicken and mushrooms stir fry

January 12, 2007

Until I was introduced to Wok with Yan about twenty years ago, Chinese cooking was a mystery to me. Of course, I had been a fan of Chinese cuisine since childhood but my acquaintance with Chinese food had been limited to my role as a diner. Then, Wok with Yan came along and it demystified [...]

Dreaming of coconuts

January 12, 2007

It was from Biba Caggiano’s now defunct TV cooking show Biba’s Italian Kitchen that I [...]

Chicken, ham and potatoes pie

January 9, 2007

When my brother-in-law, Sonny, and his family were in the Philippines a year and a half ago for a one-month vacation, we celebrated Sonny’s birthday with two parties. The first was an all-family potluck dinner; the second was a catered affair for family and extended family. For the potluck dinner, I brought two trays of [...]

Corn muffins

January 8, 2007

UPDATE on December 11, 2007: Click here for a much, much, much better recipe for corn muffins.
I have this still unopened pack of paper cups that was gathering dust at the back of one of the kitchen cabinets. I discovered it as I was reaching for a mixing bowl. On the backside of the package [...]

Butter-fried fish and corn

January 8, 2007

I have an older version of this recipe. The fish fillets are seasoned, dredged in flour and deep fried until golden. The sauce, thickened with a little starch, is cooked separately. Then, the sauce is poured over the crisp fish. It’s a dish that’s best served right after cooking.

But for a packed school lunch, it [...]
