About popcorn and popcorn cookers

For the longest time, I’ve been meaning to compose an entry pitting brands of cooked popcorn side by side. The problem is that popcorn never lasts long enough in the house to allow me to take photos. When Speedy came home last night with a container of Chef Tony’s Original Popcorn, I grabbed the camera [...]

Pork siomai (steamed dumplings), pearl balls and lumpiang shanghai (fried spring rolls)

I could brag and try to impress you by saying I was inspired and I decided to cook three dishes for last night’s dinner. But that’s not really true. I used the same ground pork mixture to cook the siomai, pearl balls and lumpiang shanghai. To be even more honest, I was only planning on [...]

(Something like) pasta a la putanesca

With the interval of postings on this blog, you’d think we haven’t been eating at home. It’s not that I haven’t been cooking; it’s just that I haven’t been blogging too much lately. At least, not in my personal blogs. There’s this project in my kids’ school and I was focused on it for the [...]

Rediscovering Baguio (a.k.a. the food trip)

*The following article was published in the Life & Travel section of today’s edition of Manila Standard Today. Don’t know which of the photos made it to print though.

We went on an unexpected trip to Baguio last month. Although I had been planning on going for at least one of the Panagbenga weekends, my husbands [...]

Fish lumpia (spring roll) with gata (coco milk)

Why fried lumpia (spring rolls) has come to be known in the Philippines as lumpiang Shanghai, I have no idea. I do know, however, that ground or minced pork is not the only good filling for fried spring rolls. Vegetables, turkey, canned tuna, tinapang bangus and ripe mangoes, and even bananas are just as great. [...]

Pinoy Cook newsletter archive

Pinoy Cook newsletter archiveI meant to do this over two weeks ago then I started on a project for my kids’ school and forgot. Whether the forgetfulness was a consequence of excitement or age, I don’t know. I’d like to think it’s the excitement because I have this “forever young” attitude. At any rate, let me make the announcement now. Still late, but better late than even later. I created an archive for the Pinoy Cook newsletter. Those who are not subscribed to the newsletter and those who accidentally delete the newsletter from their inbox can now view all the previous issues.

Baby prawns and broccoli fried rice with oyster sauce

We cook what we can afford. And, as much as my kids love those plump juicy prawns, they can only enjoy them occasionally. It’s final exams week and, during times like this, I pamper them with food they like to make sure they eat heartily. A special occasion, in a manner of speaking, that justified [...]

Steamed chicken with ginger-garlic sauce

I’ve mentioned before that we have this Sunday arrangement — my husband does the cooking on Sundays. There are times when he makes palusot (headache, don’t know what to cook or he just takes us out for the day) but there are occasions when he surprises us with really, really great home-cooked meals. Yesterday was [...]
