Buttered pearl potatoes with fresh parsley
October 17, 2007
The first time I made buttered potatoes, my daughter Sam was about 10 months old and I was pregnant with Alex. Sam is now 15 and Alex will turn 14 in January. I got the recipe from a Good Housekeeping Entertainment cookbook, the first cookbook that my husband and I bought as a newly-married couple… That was a long time ago and I’ve learned a lot since then.

Your kitchen and the environment
October 16, 2007
In case you didn’t notice, I was displaying the Blog Action Day badge on the sidebar for over a week. The campaign culminated yesterday, October 15th, with almost 20,000 blogs participating, including Pinoy Cook. What is it about? It is about the little things that we can do to help save the environment. Until the last minute, I couldn’t decide whether I was going to post an entry here or write an op-ed column.

Penne with pesto and grilled fillet of sole
October 16, 2007
…the ironing woman hasn’t shown up for the second straight day and I’m bracing myself for an afternoon before the ironing board with “The Mummy” on HBO for company. Not exactly a thrilling thought so why not pamper myself with a good pasta and fish lunch before the torture begins, right? Penne with pesto and oven-grilled fillet of sole with a glass of cucumber juice on the side might psyche me up. Maybe.

Liver paté
October 15, 2007
Very few people I know like to eat liver. And it doesn’t matter whether it’s pork liver, calf liver or chicken liver. Even my kids don’t eat liver unless — UNLESS — it’s in the form of liver pate. Then, they gorge themselves silly. And even if they know it’s liver.

Mango and melon (cantaloupe) fruit shake
October 14, 2007
Because mango season has long been over, mangoes these days aren’t all that sweet. They are what we describe as nag-a-agaw tamis — on the verge of sweetness but with a sharp tang of the sourness that it is about to discard. Half a melon and one not-quite sweet mango and the fruit shake was just perfect.

UCC Vienna Cafe
October 12, 2007
Alex’s Oreo cheesecake bar (P89.00) was thick, creamy, smooth and just sweet enough to titillate the taste buds. We used to think that only Starbucks had Oreo cheesecake but we all agreed that UCC Vienna Cafe’s Oreo cheesecake was loads better than Starbucks’.

Banana-stuffed pancakes with coco jam
October 12, 2007
Inspired by the crepes a la mode at Bliss Cafe in Baguio City, I decided to make a very Filipino pancake breakfast — stuffed with slices of sweet bananas that had been tossed in kalamansi juice and sprinkled with ground cinnamon, and drizzled with coco jam.

Nilagang baboy (boiled pork ribs with vegetables)
October 9, 2007
If there ever was a panic-time dish that 1) is nutritious and 2) requires minimal supervision during cooking, nilaga has to be it. Nilaga means boiled and it can mean boiled beef, pork or chicken. The combination of vegetables that can go with the meat are endless but my kids’ favorites are repolyo (cabbage) and kalabasa (squash).
