Alex’s choco loco
This sinful creation isn’t my doing. My daughter (she’ll be 12 in less than two weeks’ time) did this. That’s why I call it Alex’s choco loco. It’s Swiss Miss and whipped cream with Hershey’s chocolate morsels on top. When I told her it’s probably worth 5,000 calories, she refused to finish her share. Duh! As though I’m the only one who’d get fat with her concoction. I must say it’s absolutely delicious. But I had to skip dinner.

See, my daughters love Starbucks’ frappuccino. But the nearest Starbucks is 45 minutes away. Gasoline is expensive and so is Starbucks. It’s not something we can enjoy everyday. I mean, one trip to Starbucks means about PhP 500.00 for the four of us in the family. If we add brownies, or the rum cake that I love so much, or the corned beef pan de sal that is my kids’ favorite, it’s twice as much. That’s more than enough to pay for a meal for four in a good restaurant. Add to that the price of gasoline and Starbucks becomes insanity. Besides, Starbucks is soooo fattening. So, it’s a once-in-a-while treat.
Over the Christmas break, the girls did manage to cajole their dad and I into going to Starbucks almost every time we went out. Like, between Christmas and New Year, we were there four times. Four times in one week… my, bad. I could feel the whipped cream and sugar when I had to tuck my tummy in when buttoning my pants after that.
Christmas break is over and Starbucks is long ago and far away. So, my younger girl has been suffering from some kind of Starbucks withdrawal. She’s been experimenting with the proper combination of coffee and cocoa to make mocha drinks. Her dad and I are the guinea pigs. Gee, the weight we must be packing in. But how do we say no when she offers to make us one of her concoctions, right? A mocha drink was what she intended to make tonight but we don’t allow her to drink coffee at night because she keeps everyone up half the night with her chatter. So, she settled for Swiss Miss.
Anyway, if you want to make this wickedly delicious drink, here’s how my daughter did it. I did help her a little with the whipped cream.

LOL at your kids. my little ones are coffee fiends too, at such a young age! though we’ve cut down on coffee so rare treat na lang… hehehe… and i like your philosophy on calories… ako din, next week na lang ang worry. hahaha!!!
melt choc slowly whisk it
then add bit of cream
pour into espresso.. mocha
mahal din ang starbucks dito…. para treat lang sa kin
aba i wasnt allowed coffee till I was 15! pag dating na sa europe to ease out ng freezing weather
stef, if i think about the calories while drinking stuff like this, i won’t enjoy it, ‘di ba?
aye, sha, ayos! i’ll show your comment to my daughter. shucks, tataba na naman kami lahat. BTW, my 13-year-old, she dipped the gummy bears you sent in melted chocolate. susme. naka toothpick pa! will post picks tonight.
Is this pretty common? Kids drinking coffee? What age do they start drinking coffee? It’s probably mostly milk and cream spiked with a little coffee, no? So caffeine is probably not a big deal?
Like Sha, I started (in college) to take the edge off winter chill.
Gummy bears in chocolate, sounds like the kind of weird (to me) confection my kids would think up.
Connie, Do your girls know about s’mores? tradiitonal girl scout campfire food, toasted marshmallows and chocolate in a graham cracker “sandwich”.
JS, my kids don’t drink coffee-coffee. It’s mostly milk chocolate with a little coffee stirred in. Most common concoction is Swiss Miss with coffee.
Oh, I forgot the post the gummy bears in chocolate pic…
The s’mores we know are the ones in boxes. Quaker, if I remember correctly. We used to buy huge boxes then they got tired of it.
I think I’m the one who needs those calories
But even when I made drinking Swiss Miss an everyday chore, I still remained ectomorphic
While those people around want to lose weight, I am hoping to gain mass. One way would be, I think, to have the treat above
and make it as a regular part of my morning rituals (assuming I already have enough money to be able to maintain a 1 pack Swiss Miss / day). The only problem now then would be… diabetes?
[...] Right after Alex made her choco loco on Friday evening, older sister Sam took over the kitchen. She had this idea–dipping gummy bears in melted chocolate. I don’t know how she located the mixing bowls. Next moment I peeked in the kitchen, she was already stirring the melted chocolate. She did it all by herself–inserting toothpicks into the gummy bears, dipping them in chocolate, laying them out on a sheet of wax paper to harden… she even washed the dirty mixing bowls. She also ate her concoction. I tried two and… well, they were pretty interesting. [...]
Fleeb, two things:
1) You win some, you lose some.
2) Give and take.
Hehehehehe
I’m a Starbucks fan (I’m Miss Rhumba). But ever since I came here, hindi na ako naka Starbucks. Super mahal I don’t even want to think about it.
I like this post. Natuwa ako sa daughter mo. I think I would have done the same thing.
Here, every time I miss my Starbucks days, I just make iced choco drink (Caotina powdered cocoa with fresh milk) or iced coffee (Jacob’s coffee with milk). Maybe I should try what your daughter did: add some whipped cream. Thanks for the tip, Sassy!
Jayred, hi! Don;t skip the gym the day after.
…cool…Ü
omg this is awesome. i’ll make this at cooking class!
korek! starbucks is super mahal…my gosh! aside from mahal, fattening pa..hehehe…anyway, like you, once a month lang ang starbucks namin…para tipid…i like their tea drinks, though… since, my kids doesn’t like mallows (weird, no?), they put chocnut or chocomani on their choco drinks…kids have weird tastes, no?hehehe…
