Bangus sisig and daing na galunggong

It was during my birthday dinner last year when I first experienced bangus (milkfish) sisig. Sisig is, of course, traditionally a pork dish made with grilled and chopped pork ears and face and served sizzling on a hot plate. So, you can just imagine my delight when three kinds of sisig were served, one of which was bangus sisig. I always thought there was no other place to enjoy the dish except in a restaurant until about two weeks ago when I found packets of frozen bangus sisig in the supermarket.

Preparing it was a breeze. In fact, it was my 12-year-old daughter, Alex, who fried the thawed bangus sisig with lots of chopped onions. It was good although I’m sure it would have been even better if we had a hotplate.

The frozen bangus sisig is a product of Seaking. Other products include the boneless daing na galunggong (marinated roundscad), regular and spicy.

That’s the regular variety in the photo. The spicy daing na galunggong is really, really hot and not too child-friendly. Below, the daing na galunggong as cooked.

Although we enjoyed the bangus sisig tremendously, the daing na galunggong wasn’t such a hit with my family. Even my husband, who is a true blue galunggong fan, didn’t get too excited about it. The fish flesh was dry—I suppose that marinating the galunggong made the flesh of the already rather dry fish even more dry. It wasn’t even all that easy frying the daing na galunggong. Deboning made the fish soggy and turning them in the hot oil took a lot of patience and care. In short, although I intend to buy more bangus sisig in the future, the boneless daing na galunggong, well… I’ll just charge that one to experience.

There was a third Seaking item that I bought—the frozen rellenong bangus (stuffed linkfish). Now, that one, you really do NOT want to try. It was the most terrible rellenong bangus I have ever eaten. I mean, even for a pretend rellenong bangus, it was still bad. It looked like an oversized embutido with too much extenders. It came in a box so the thing wasn’t visible. I only realized my mistake after opening the box.

Oh, well, one out of three isn’t all that bad. Even food shopping is a learning experience.

    thanks so much for featuring a review of this product. i’ve been seeing this recently in the supermarket but am too cheap to take risks hahaha. i too am a sisig lover, used to love the sisig at Trellis then, Dencios now…i’ve been buying those Monterey sisig packs and yes, sauteeing them with lots of onions does make a difference, add a few drops of seasoning and were in business. one thing that interests me is the health factor of bangus sisig, at least fish di ba? sayang, just came from the supermarket..should have checked out your blog before leaving LOL

    i’m sure all of us would appreciate your infos about products in the supermarket.

    the hardest task of being a housewife is thinking what to feed the family - healthy and delicious! i have a 4 year old and every meal is a challege.

    LOL NAOJ12, I can only write about what I have tried personally na HINDI sample hehehe That’s to make sure that what I tried is the very thing that is available to the public. Don’t worry, every discovery in the market and the grocery, I’ll post about. Wow, mabinilis dadami entries dito.

    Hi sam, meron na rin pala sa Gerry’s ha. Bangus sisig is becoming veru popular because it’s a much healthier alternative to pork sisig. Of course, there’s still nothing like pork sisig LOL

    i have never seen seaking’s bangus sisig (i often do my grocery at sm hypermart).  i often buy the rellenong bangus.  well, for me and my husband this product is ok.  all i have to do is slice and fry.  i slice it really thin so it gets cooked easily.  i always serve this with veggies.  i’ll be going to the supermarket today.  i will try to look for the bangus sisigsmile
