Bear with me… the cookbook has passed dream stage

It’s been rather hard to pull myself together to open this blog after what happened last Friday. You’ll have to read it in my other blog. I suggest that you do so that you can better understand the rest of this entry.

Done? Okay…

My first reaction was to put Pinoy Cook on semi-retirement. Meaning, no updating to wrap up the work on the cookbook that I first mentioned more than a year ago. The writing part wasn’t so hard, taking better photos was harder. It didn’t help either that I couldn’t — still can’t — work fulltime on the book. I have a family — a hungry husband and kids, I have a twice weekly op-ed column, I write for a magazine, I teach “Internet and Law” to high school seniors and there’s also an IT Guild which is like a combination of IT and high school journalism. But the most trying part was writing the cookbook and keeping this blog up-to-date. It was like writing two cookbooks at the same time.

So, if you noticed, the other food blog had been moved so that maintaining the online part will now entail less work. Hopefully, there won’t be any reason to put the blog on semi-retirement. The cookbook is practically done. Actually, it’s done for all intents and purposes. I still want to re-shoot some photos but the content has been complete for a couple of months now. I was just, you know, hanging on to it. I don’t know how to explain it. The moment it felt complete, it was like I poured so much of me into it and it would be hard to part with it. But then, I didn’t write it just for me to pore over, did I?

cookbook files in the hard drive of my MacBook

Anyway, so the files had been sitting in my MacBook waiting for I-don’t-know-what when Marketman discovered the rip-off. There was this inexplicable feeling that the I-don’t-know-what that I had been waiting for has finally materialized.

Please don’t expect a traditional cookbook. In fact, I’d rather call it a foodbook rather than a cookbook. It isn’t even organized in the usual way. It’s meant for the kitchen (lots of recipes) but it can also be a bedside companion (food articles). My original plan was to include some recipes from the blog archives but the way that the book evolved, well, all the recipes are either radically new (result of too much time to experiment in the kitchen) or new versions of recipes that have been published here before. But it is the articles about appreciation for Filipino food that I am especially proud of, written during what I’d like to think of as extraordinary moments of inspiration. Beyond that, I won’t say anymore at this point.

That said, let me share a comment posted by long-time reader Sam who is based in Kuwait:

I owe you my success in starting my mini-catering business here in Kuwait! What started as a hobby became an adventure and now a business-venture with close friends! I can’t express how much i thank you for everything :)

You may click here to read the full comment.

I want you to know that through all the headaches and heartaches I’ve gone through to keep this blog online, and there have been so many from content thieves to technical difficulties, it is your feedbacks — like Sam’s — that has kept me going.

“Imitation is the best form of flattery”(?) something like that…have used that phrase during my high school days wherein some higher studes steal our idea on cheer dancing competition. I know how it feels to be ripped off, I happen to join in one Singapore based forum where a lot of recipes were ripped off! It was very horrible.

Anyway, whatever you’re decision, I will be at your back supporting..but before you go semi-retired…may I say…thank you bec of your blog and also kay Marketman…I learn a lot of new Filipino food. I enjoy reading this and your other blog. Your my inspiration. Good luck.

  13. Connie on August 15th, 2007 9:54 pm

I just got home from the mall. Actually, it was a side trip but I took the opportunity to buy a new (and bigger) plate, and a springform pan, for the dessert photos I still want to re-shoot.

Please know that I’m going full-blast with the project. And that I’m looking into all the possibilities with regard to making it available on Amazon for those abroad.

Thank you for your feedbacks and support. These are very exciting times indeed. :)

    Hi Connie!

I’m a big fan of your website and it would be exciting to have a copy of your food book. I’m always excited to cook because your recipes are really simple (ingredients & procedure). It’s really sad how people copy things on the internet without even acknowledging the rightful owner of the idea. But may mga ganun tlaga na tao. Anyway, good luck in your food book & I hope maka pa sign din ako copy kapag bumisita kmi ng Pinas.

God bless you and your family.

p.s. btw, I recommended your website to my “non-Filipino” friends and they like it. Mag try daw sila ng recipes mo!

  15. C on August 16th, 2007 12:17 am

Yay! It will be on Amazon. Looking forward to it. I actually had my niece buy Kitty Go’s books in the Philippines and have her shipped them here. I’m glad I don’t have to do this again when your book is in print.

  16. Jaecel on August 16th, 2007 1:39 am

  19. Marianne on August 16th, 2007 2:45 pm

I’m glad you were not discouraged by unethical writers, bloggers, and journalists who are always looking for the easy way out.

Push through with the book - you deserve the satisfaction. Congratulations in advance!

  20. honey on August 18th, 2007 10:49 am

congrats miss connie. you teach internet and law to high school students? they also teach that subject in San Sebastian College of Law. I keep wondering how they manage to extend teaching that subject till the end of the semester

  21. Connie on August 18th, 2007 11:40 am

Thank you, thank you! Double time na ako hhahaha

honey, when we first did the course outline, it was a skeleton. by the time we were through, you can’t imagine just how many topics can fall under that subject. :)

  24. ivan espiritu on August 18th, 2007 6:07 pm

God bless!

  25. Connie on August 19th, 2007 3:20 am

  26. ivan espiritu on August 19th, 2007 7:09 pm

    Hi, Connie!

I just found the time to open my personal email and I got frantic when I read your entry about retiring this blog. Thank God you changed your mind! You never know how much you have touched our lives.

I really hope you will have a lecture, cooking demo or something here in Cebu so we can meet you in person.

More power to you Connie! And yes, I will buy not one but 3 of your cookbook - one for me and for my girls (ages 15 and 10) for their future households!

  29. auee on August 20th, 2007 11:58 pm

Ah finally light at the end of the tunnel - mine that is… matatapos na pala waiting time ko hehe It seems you’d need to schedule some sort of book signing for us, your fans.

    Hi Ms. Connie,

I can’t wait for your foodbook! I’ll definitely get one. I’m newly wed and still lives with my in-laws. But when we live on our own, I want to cook good food for my family by myself.

    Pa-sign din ha!

  33. Gene on August 26th, 2007 9:25 pm

    Hi Ms. Connie,

I’ll be waiting for the release of the book. Though I’m not a good cook I like to learn more in the kitchen, especially when my father’s cooking is really good. I asked him once to teach me his recipes and he said na “tantyahan lang yan,” and he’s a carpenter for that matter. And being a late bloomer in terms of learning how to cook, that technique didn’t work for me. I bought several cookbooks but to no avail. And I am really interested in the way you cook, and with the comments you receive means that your recipe really works. More power to you!
