Betty Crocker’s blueberry muffins



Taking the kids to the supermarket is fun. They discover food products that I’d never take a second look at. It also means that the bill can double or even triple. Anyway, it was one of my daughters (can’t remember now which one) who discovered Betty Crocker’s blueberry muffin mix a couple of years ago. Unless the kids are with me, I stay away from the thing when I shop. Too bloody expensive. Good but still expensive. One pouch that costs about PhP 85.00 yields six medium sized muffins. That makes it a little over PhP 14.00 per muffin. Plus the cost of electricity, well… it’s a better idea to bake the muffins from scratch. And muffins are one of easiest things to bake.

But the girls accompanied us to the supermarket last week and the younger one looked at me with those pleading eyes… She so loves to bake but she doesn’t yet have the patience to bake from scratch. And she never goes wrong with Betty Crocker’s blueberry muffins. I tried to recall when the last time was that we bought such an expensive ready made baking mix and I couldn’t remember. It was that long ago. I said okay, get one pouch.

So she baked them late yesterday afternoon. I lined the muffin pans for her and she did everything else including washing the wire whisk and the mixing bowl. Six muffins meant she had two, her sister had two, their dad and I had one each. Life’s not fair. :lol:

    Hi Connie!

    I was just wondering, Simply Recipes started this email update thing. It’s a great way for me to file those recipes there on my gmail account.

    Would you have a similar feature? I mean, Digg and de.lic.io.us is a bit clunky for me at this time.

    I do have you on my bookmark and i file it in firefox but nothing beats something I can pull from the net anytime.

    Hi Jobert. I used to have a weekly newsletter kind of update. I had been thinking of doing it again but I’m having second thoughts. I simply hated how people would register knowing they had filters installed in their e-mails and they expected me to manually do the verification. Unless I did, the e-mails bounced. I ended up wasting bandwidth.

    Don’t the RSS feeds work for you?

    oh… I was thinking of something I can file as email. Hey! No worry, I’ll just keep bookmarking. With RSS, it just pulls the latest posts.

    Anyway, no worry. I still enjoy your posts here. Like I said, once I have enough energy and gall to pull out the pan and fire up the burner, your recipes are sure to be tops on my list.

    I mean, after this whole week brouhaha over the pinoy net, over at Ultra, and over Europe, the kitchen is a godsend.

    And finally, have your heard of Newsvine? It’s a nice repository of news articles. It’s like Digg but content is fed by news wirers like AP. Users just vote it up or down. If you’re interested, I’ll send you an invite. I got mine thru Yuga, bless his soul.

    I had to pause after the first sentence, “taking the kids to the supermarket is fun”. Now why don’t I ever say that, I wonder? Then it came to me a bit further down on this post, it’s because they end up doubling my grocery bill, that’s why!!:lol: dagnabbit, and you end up with one measly muffin. life really is not fair….

    JMom, I felt so bitin with one muffin I baked butterscotch brownies the day after (meaning yesterday).

    My husband is smart. When it’s his turn to go to the grocery, he does it after work so he won’t have to take the kids. hahahahaha

    As I was saying, Betty Crocker’s blueberry muffin mix was my favorite. I discovered it in the mid-’90s.

    It’s so easy to bake (but of course) and it’s yummy. But you’re right: it’s way too expensive.

    Here in Switzerland, I don’t see this brand. However, there’s Dr. Oetker which produces superb brownies mix. Yum, yum. :-)

    Hello Ms. Connie again. Haha. :) Remember me? lol well anyway, I made Ms. Clotilde`s mendiants and truffles and posted them on my personal xanga. I didn`t quite understand Wordpress so I thought of just putting the food posts on my xanga, along with my other personal stuff.

    So yeah, yun lang. Betty Crocker in HK costs about HK$ 30, so like P 210? It`s even cheaper there! :P

    Hi Connie,
    You’re right, this really feels like talking to myself. Your comments about Betty Crocker’s muffins are very interesting. Here in the west if you’re a serious baker, you usually won’t admit using the boxed variety. But I know a lot of people who just jazz them up and pretend that they make them from scratch. I bake so I would know the difference in the taste and texture but “the mass of men who lead lives of quiet desperation” probably just won’t care as long as it’s sweet.

    Dexie, ripe or unripe? Almost summer here. Mango season will be on in a month’s time. Ooh, lovely.

    Perfectly said, Connie :) Some ready mixes are okay but, you know, it’s like ready made sauces… you can’t really claim that you cooked something if you just poured and mixed. The ones who eat may not be able to tell the difference but YOU CAN, right? It’s a matter of self-respect, I guess. At least that’s how I see it.
