Cakes from Kookie Korner

The day I brought the frog legs at Rustan’s Supermarket at Shangri-La Plaza was the day that my husband drooled over Kookie Korner’s cakes. Kookie Korner has a stall right at the supermarket entrance. He asked if we wanted strawberry shortcake but I guess it was more of a rhetorical question. The kids and I rarely say no.
Our 13-year-old, Sam, is especially crazy about anything with strawberries in it.
While ordering, our 12-year-old, Alex, started whining about wanting something with chocolate. To compromise, my husband chose a small strawberry shortcake and ordered half of a chocolate roll. That should satisfy everyone.
We made some coffee when we got home and prepared to attack the cakes. They were good although I wish that the strawberry shortcake had less extenders in the frosting. The bread was okay and the overall taste had a pleasant balance of acidity from the strawberries and the sweetness of sugar.
The chocolate roll proved to be more satisfying. The fudgy frosting was thick and wonderful (much better than Red Ribbon’s), the bread not too dry (though I wished it were more moist) and the roll wasn’t sickeningly sweet as many chocolate cakes often are.
The 6-inch strawberry shortcake was PhP 190.00 if I remember correctly. And the chocolate roll was PhP 145.00. I could be wrong–gee, I don’t remember much from last Sunday. Our first stop was Powerbooks and I felt we had spent our entire shopping budget for the day after paying for our purchases. But then, like I told my husband, there are two things I don’t want to scrimp on–books and food. So, I forgot how much we spent that day. ![]()
