Penne with pesto and grilled fillet of sole
October 16, 2007
…the ironing woman hasn’t shown up for the second straight day and I’m bracing myself for an afternoon before the ironing board with “The Mummy” on HBO for company. Not exactly a thrilling thought so why not pamper myself with a good pasta and fish lunch before the torture begins, right? Penne with pesto and oven-grilled fillet of sole with a glass of cucumber juice on the side might psyche me up. Maybe.

Fish head soup with coconut cream
October 4, 2007
When you hear the term “fish head soup”, the picture that forms in the mind is fish head in a clear broth with leafy green vegetables…But I’ve often dreamed of a fish head soup that was more filling, more robust and less ordinary. No clear broth with subtle hints of garlic and ginger but full-bodied and with a lot of bite in it. Chilis and coconut cream seemed like a great idea.

Sukiyaki-cut beef with Kecap Manis
September 26, 2007
Kecap Manis is a thick and syrupy sweet soy sauce that comes from Indonesia. Sweetened with palm sugar and flavored with star anise and other Oriental spices, its flavor is more complex than ordinary soy sauce. It’s great as a dipping sauce but works equally well as a marinade…

Pepperoni and cheese stuffed bread rolls
September 23, 2007
Sometimes, you dream up of something that’s great for a meal for one and, at the same time, pretty enough and easy enough to prepare for a party.
What are they? They are what the title says — pepperoni and cheese stuffed bread rolls. Served warm, the cheese is soft and gooey and every bite bursts with the mixed flavors of the pepperoni and cheese.

A side dish: buttered corn and carrots
March 10, 2007
When my kids ask for fried chicken — and they do about once a month — I try to vary the side dish that I served with the chicken. The same rule applies with grilled or roast pork or even fried fish. Grilled or fried meat or seafood is always better when there is a [...]

Pork barbecue fried rice
February 22, 2007
I’m posting this recipe under ’school lunches’ although this pork barbecue fried rice never quite made it to the kids’ lunch boxes. They both stayed home today. Sam has been feeling sick since Tuesday and, yesterday afternoon, Alex was down with some kind of bug as well. It might be the abrupt change of weather, [...]

Tortang sardinas at togue (canned sardines and mongo sprout frittata)
February 14, 2007
In my tortang tilapia entry, reader Felixberto commented, “I’ve been making torta using ligo sardines. Haven’t tried tilapia, With sardines, my torta crumbles… I was wondering, should I put in the veggies first before the fish?” And my response was, “…perhaps the best way is to mix the cooked veggies with the beaten eggs, pour [...]

Hot pepper cheese toast
January 23, 2007
I wanted toast but didn’t feel like butter and jam. I wanted something hot from the oven but was too lazy to bake muffins or scones. Too lazy even to make some pancakes. I thought I’d have a salad with croutons. But not just any croutons but something spicy and really bursting with flavor.
I reviewed [...]
