Vietnamese chicken and pineapple dish
Until I started leafing through my new Vietnamese and Malaysian cookbooks, I never realized how much similarity there is among the cuisines of Southeast Asian countries. For instance, there is a Malaysian dish very much like our own nilagang baka but comes with whole caps of black Chinese mushrooms and is served with soy sauce [...]

Vietnamese barbecued pork with garlic and egg fried rice
I bought four new cookbooks over the weekend — two Vietnamese and two Malaysian — and, so far, I’ve cooked two dishes from recipes in the cookbooks. I thought I’d start with the simpler ones since I’m not that familiar yet with Vietnamese and Malaysian cooking. We had grilled pork, Vietnamese style, last night. There’s [...]

Jipan Japanese bakery and coffee shop
My family used to be loyal Jipan customers until we moved to the suburb and trips to the mall became less and less frequent. We loved Jipan’s bread products which, although quite expensive, were worth every centavo.
Earlier today, we chaperoned our girls and their friends to the mall to see “Simpsons, the movie.” To be [...]

Across [...]

Taiwanese shaved ice
Halo-halo will forever be associated with Filipino cuisine. But this dessert/snack made with fruits, milk and shaved ice are found in a lot of other Asian countries too. Malaysia has its shaved ice with red bean sauce, China has its fruit salad, Korea has its paht bing-soo and, below, there’s the Taiwanese version with feathery [...]

Chicken teriyaki
When you discover what’s in a bottle of teriyaki sauce, you will wonder why you have been buying bottles and bottles of the stuff when it’s so easy to prepare it at home. Mirin, sake, soy sauce and sugar. Some ginger, if you like, but not really necessary. In fact, the traditional Japanese teriyaki recipe [...]

Pot stickers (fried siomai)
Let me take a break from the series of dishes I cooked using pre-boiled pork belly. I still have two recipes to post in that series — a fast and easy pancit canton (chow mein) and repolyo guisado (sauteed cabbage) with a new twist. But I am excited about something I cooked a couple of [...]
