Noodle soup with mushroom balls

Noodle soup with mushroom ballsThey cost P375 per kilo but you can buy as little as 100 grams. I’m not a fan of processed food but my daughter, Sam, wanted crab balls and shrimp balls and I figured it wasn’t such a risk since we could only buy a hundred grams of each to try them out. Much more practical than buying the pre-packed brands. And since I can eat neither the crab nor shrimp balls, I ordered a hundred grams of mushroom balls as well… I placed them in a bowl with cooked noodles and vegetables and poured in hot home-made broth. Delicious!

Oven-proof plastic bakeware by Glad

baked macaroniMy own children are not immune from the charms of my baked mac and my younger daughter, Alex, requested that I prepare a tray of baked mac for her class’ Christmas party today. I did. But since I preferred not to send the baked mac in any of my Anchor Hocking glass baking dishes, my intention was to use one of those disposable aluminum trays. I found something better last night in the supermarket — oven-proof plastic bakeware by Glad which comes with transparent covers.

Cornmeal, finally!

cornmeal or harina de maizIt’s something I’ve been searching for for the longest time. I knew it was essential for baking real corn muffins but imported food items, especially those that are not all that popular in the Philippines, are not always easy to find. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, I was able to buy yellow cornmeal at The Landmark in TriNoma. I just baked a dozen corn muffins a la Kenny Rogers but I’m reserving that for the noche buena blog (take a peak) which goes live on December 12th. Now, I look forward to making my own corn tortillas so I can cook some chicken enchiladas. :)

What exactly is cornmeal? The cornmeal box says “harina de maiz” which literally translates to corn flour. But if you look closely at the cornmeal in the photo, it doesn’t resemble flour at all. Recipezaar’s kitchen dictionary says it is dried ground corn. Wikipedia says there is steel ground cornmeal and stone ground cornmeal.

Shrimps, cabbage and bell pepper stir fry

shrimps, cabbage and bell pepper stir fryLooks like I’m going to stop being a Shopwise regular. The Landmark opened at the TriNoma mall recently and the supermarket is a cook’s dream. We used to shop at Landmark in Makati but those were the days when I was still working in an office. For a stay-at-home mom, Makati is just too far away. The fact that the commercial center is a parking nightmare doesn’t make it any attractive either. But The Landmark at TriNoma… that’s manageable.

Assorted beans and peppercorn melange

assorted beans, split peas and lentilsIt’s basic to soak dried beans overnight to rehydrate them and to cook them in plenty of simmering water for at least an hour and a half. But there were peas and lentils mixed in with the beans so I wondered if they wouldn’t cook to a mash before the beans were done.

The instructions on the package read: “…separate the beans…” Huwaaaaatt?? That’s 400 grams of beans and peas… separate them? It’s not like I’m 20 years old with 20/20 vision…

Mint jelly for my waffles

mint jellyFact: Only I don’t pour syrup over my pancakes and waffles. My husband and daughters cannot eat pancakes and waffles without smothering them with syrup. I do, however, like to pile on fruit jam over my pancakes and waffles.

Crepes a la mode

We were watching Little Miss Sunshine a couple of weeks ago and there was this scene where Olive (Abigail Breslin) ordered waffles a la mode (she pronounced it a la mo-dee). The waitress explained that it meant the waffles would be served with ice cream and her uncle went on to expound on the origin [...]

10-minute stir fried chicken, quail eggs and vegetables

We were at the supermarket yesterday for another week’s supply of food and more food. It hasn’t even been a week since the last trip to the supermarket but the freezer was almost empty yesterday. When the cart was full, my husband asked if I thought all of that stuff would last for two weeks. [...]
