Farmer’s Market
Once upon a time, when we were newlyweds, we lived about five minutes away from FarmerÕs Market in Cubao, Quezon City. My husband and I would do our marketing every Sunday morning. When we decided to buy our weekÕs supply of fish there last Sunday, I thought how nice if would be if we could just go there every weekend even if it means travelling the distance from Antipolo. The fish is fresh, the variety never wanting. Of course, the prices are much higher too. But a hundred pesos for a kilo of large live clams still spouting water (below, right) sounds reasonable compared to forty pesos for a kilo of tiny clams whose shells are so tightly shut that thereÕs no way of knowing how long they have been dead. Fish delivery is twice a day–at dawn and early afternoon. If you canÕt wake up early enough to do your marketing in the morning, you can catch up in the afternoon. It was around 3 p.m. when we were there last Sunday and the tuna had just been delivered (below, left).

There was goat meat (above, left) which is not a regular item in smaller wet markets. And I mean whole carcasses of them. Actually, I am not a huge fan of goat meat since there are more bones than meat but I have eaten well-prepared kalderetang kambing and found it delicious. In the vegetable section (above, right), there were cherry tomatoes, lots of shallots, fresh mushroomsÉ
If youÕre one of those discerning cooks who donÕt mind paying a premium for superior quality, FarmerÕs Market is a great place to go to.
