Fresh pineapples
Like most tropical countries, fresh fruits flood the market during the hot summer months. While there are fruits that are abundant all year round, pineapples, melons, watermelons and mangoes are traditional summer harvests. There are a lot of horticulture projects aimed at making them all-season fruits but before and after summer, they are not as large nor as juicy nor as sweet.
In the photo, an ambulant pineapple vendor selling sweet and juicy pineapples along the road. It is so interesting to watch these vendors at work–how carefully they carve around the “eyes” of the pineapples so that very little of the fruit pulp is wasted. See the diagonal grooves that run around the whole pineapples? Instead of merely cutting off the skins and about an inch of the pulp to remove the “eyes”, the vendor carves around them. Maybe, it’s artisrtry; maybe, it’s frugality. Or, maybe, it’s both.
