On Pete Wells’ “In the Belly of the Blog”

Got an e-mail from the Pinoy food bloggers mailing list and it seems that some food bloggers are smarting from a Food & Wine column by someone called Pete Wells. The guy doesn’t have a lot of good things to say about food blogs. In fact, he’s downright insulting especially for what he terms as “cheese-sandwich blogs”. I don’t take offense though. I don’t have a “cheese-sandwich blog”.
Actually, I agree with the guy. While he may have made sweeping generalizations, I agree that there are far too many bad food blogs around and they outnumber the good ones. And the bad blog phenomenon isn’t even peculiar to food blogs–there are simply far too many bad blogs around period.
Food Porn Watch isn’t exactly discriminating with the blogs it aggregates. Even those that steal content from bona fide food bloggers qualify as “food blogs” and are listed there. I wish it weren’t so.
I am not going to get defensive over this. If we believe that we have excellent food blogs–and I know I do–we shouldn’t feel slighted by this guy’s words.

Hi,
I really enjoy reading through your articles. I like food and I like cooking but my husband is not a foodie and my 6-year-old is turning out just like her Dad. Anyway, it’s not really fun when you don’t have anybody to enjoy eating and cooking with. But it’s a blessing as well because I work fulltime and travel 2 and a half hours everyday. Well, as a compensation I visit a lot of food websites whenever I can find the time. So just keep on writing.
Connie
Hi Connie. Oooh, that’s like saying hi to myself.
2-1/2 hours everyday… I can sympathize. I used to drive from Antipolo to Pasay and back when I was still working. The traffic and the stress were no joke.
So long as my family eats, the blog will get updated.
Thanks for posting this. I just read Pete Wells’ article - he’s free to express his own opinion just like all bloggers out there. I think there’s no such thing as a boring foodblog. After all, blogs are supposed to be online diaries. The blogger isn’t forcing anybody to read his/her blog anyway but it’s for his/her own self expression & enjoyment. So more power esp to foodbloggers!
Well, not all blogs are online diaries. But I agree that style is personal and no one can please everyone.
we cant please everyone…. though I seems to draw few french foodies to mine… ewan
and Pete Wells has rights to voice out his opinions too.
Some just cant take his criticism.
I was not offended but am having a belly of laugh with all the hooplas
mine certainly not cheese blog dear… mine is simply passion for food
am off to north burbs for another meal
Hi Connie,
I read Mr. Wells’s article too and I’m not a bit offended, though I know that my foodblog is one of those that he mean (hihihi). Pero keber ko sa sinasabi niya .
The way I see it, if you don’t like it, stop reading it. If you do, (like how I enjoy lurking on this one!) then keep going! It’s not rocket science.
And I DO like this blog, btw! Great ideas for a college student who misses Mom’s Asian cooking! Thanks for all the good work!
Sha, you’re good with Continental dishes eh. And you’re so familiar with European markets. So the French love you.
And definitely no cheese blog.
Beng, you can’t be a cheese blog. A blog with that gorgeous goregous tiramisu entry can never be a cheese blog.
Peter Wells is referring to one genre of food blogs. And I have seen some of them. ANd I can’t blame Wells. I mean, elegant language is definitely not a requirement in blogging. But decent grammar and spelling naman siguro… and coherent thoughts…??? It’s one thing to write for oneself, di ba, but making a private journal public means you want others to read it too. The rules change.
That is true, Cara. Just stop reading things you don’t like. Less headache.
Connie dear thank you . By the way natanggap mo ba ang email ko?
Contrary to what Mr. Wells has said, I care about what someone had for lunch.
I consider all food blogs educational and entertaining- from the “cheese-sandwich blog” to the sophisticated ones.
Though the one thing that I am concerned about is when bloggers give out way too much personal information in their food blogs.
I think that some things are better left unpublished.
You’re welcome, Beng.
Still have to check the houseonahill account.
That’s a good point, Keli. I’m thinking now that the reason I find some food blogs rather blonde is because I have to sift through all the personal stuff to get to the food.
very interesting, but I don’t agree with you
