Sam’s butterscotch brownies

I meant to post two entries last Saturday but some things got in my way. First, my broadband (sic) internet slowed to a crawl which made uploading photos tedious. Then, on Saturday afternoon, right after lunch, I caught a bug that kept me in bed until early Sunday afternoon. Feeling well enough to go out by Sunday evening, we had dinner at Zensho Teppanyaki Restaurant and Sushi Bar. I went online around 9.00 p.m. only to find out that some of my blogs were down. That was enough to send me into a relapse. Or, maybe, I wasn’t really well yet and I was just too darn deadset on going out.

Anyway, this entry is not so much about how to bake butterscotch brownies but about a nifty way to decorate them. We had some leftover candies from the oatmeal cookies that I baked for Family Day at the kids’ school and my daughter Sam found good use for them.

It isn’t unusual to top brownies with chocolate morsels. Chopped nuts would have been an even more logical choice and we have a variety of nuts in the pantry for baking. But one thing about my kids… they don’t like nuts in their brownies. They don’t even touch chocolate bars with nuts in them. So, when Sam asked what was available for toppings, and I told her it was a choice between the leftover candies and nuts, I suppose it took a hundredth of a second for her to decide. I can’t say she made a bad choice. The butterscotch brownies that she baked were not only pretty, they were delicious as well. The crisp coating of the chocolate candies was a great contrast to the chewiness of the brownies. Wonderful!
