Shakey’s Pizza

Before Pizza Hut and Domino’s hit the local scene, pizza was not exactly part of the Filipino’s everyday vocabulary. Probably the only restaurant that offered good pizza was The Italian Village which folded up several years back. There were Magoo’s and DiMark’s but you really have to have a bad craving for pizza to visit them since there were only a handful of outlets in the Metro Manila area. Later, there was Angelino’s which I really, really loved.
The only pizza parlor that operated as a chain, opening branches in most major cities, was Shakey’s Pizza. We used to go there frequently when we were kids. That was before Shakey’s decided to ditch its family-friendly atmosphere in favor of the beer drinkers and band fans all through the 80s to the mid-90s.
Sometime during the late 90s, Shakey’s made another turnabout, decided to get rid of the loud music and beer crowd to once again attract families. We decided to have dinner there a few weekends ago. The dinner was filling but hardly memorable. The mojo potatoes that accompanied the fried chicken were disappointing. They used to be covered with seasoned bread crumbs but now they’re just covered with flour. The chicken was just so-so and the pizza was high on seasonings but short on cheese. My younger daughter was the only one who ordered spaghetti. Asked how it was, she replied, “Okay la’ng“ which, translated into her personal rating system, means I’m hungry and it’s food.
My older girl who wanted to go to Pancake House, but got outvoted, blamed all of us for the lousy food all through the night.
Sigh.
