Taster’s Choice vanilla roast coffee
I’m a serious coffee drinker. After my older daughter was born and she was keeping us up most nights, my husband installed a coffee maker right inside the bedroom and we would brew coffee at all hours. That was when we could get the kind of coffee beans that we wanted. I don’t know why but there came a time when ground coffee just got more and more bland and the only kind that we continued to enjoy was the local barako. But when you drink the same thing day in and day out, it starts to get boring. That was when we started exprimenting with different brands and flavors of instant coffee. If it’s in the supermarket, chances are we’ve tried it. And the one thing no one can make me drink is Nescafe Classic. Sheesh, I don’t know why it’s called coffee. I also dislike Taster’s Choice.
Among the Nescafe line, it’s Nescafe Gold for me. Nescafe used to have its Master Roast which, for me to this day, is the best that Nescafe ever produced. I don’t know if the line was sold outside the Philippines but for a few glorious years, we enjoyed our Master Roast alternatively with brewed barako until, for reasons I never knew, Master Roast was discontinued. With Master Roast gone, we started hunting for something new again. That was when we discovered Nescafe Gold. It’s great but it’s not a good idea to drink the same brand for several months in a row. So it’s an on-and-off affair with Nescafe Gold. That’s how it has been through the years. Some have become favorites; others, we have sworn off. Among our favorites are Yuban from Colombia and Riva (in the photo), a Brazilian brand and a relatively new discovery.
Riva coffee is what we have been enjoying for the past couple of months. Unfortunately, no supermarket in the suburb carries it. My husband buys it in the city supermarkets. Last Sunday, seeing that our last jar of Riva was down to its last few teaspoonfuls, we went to the nearest supermarket to buy the best the was available. Sadly, there weren’t too many choices. The only one that looked interesting was Taster’s Choice vanilla roast. My dislike for regular Taster’s Choice coffee aside, we decided to try the vanilla roast. I’m a sucker for flavored coffee and, well, I chose the smallest jar anyway. If it turned out badly, it’s just as small jar… not that hard to consume. Or so I thought.
The directions in the label says add a rounded teaspoonful of vanila roast coffee to a cup of hot water. Gee, with a rounded teaspoonful, the “coffee” tasted like colored sweetened water. I couldn’t taste the coffee! Double the amount and still nothing. It was so disappointing. I kept thinking that I should have let my dislike for Taster’s Choice got the better of me when we were in the supermarket trying to decide which brand to try.
Anyway, since Taster’s Choice vanilla roast is no good as a hot beverage, maybe my daughters can use it to whip something similar to the choco loco that we had a couple of months ago. Or, perhaps, we can bake a mocha cake. Or make some mocha pudding. With the prices these days, one can’t be wasteful.
