Where’s the cookbook? (cookbook update)

September 4, 2006 | Miscellaneous | Print This Post Print This Post

A couple of months ago, I told you I was writing a cookbook. I’m happy to announce that the pace has picked up and it looks like I will be able to finish the first draft by the end of this month. I am finally happy with how the photos are turning out. I am doubly happy that we have a new househelp to do the washing and cleaning each and every time I cook up a storm in the kitchen. It isn’t a joke cooking meals (including peeling, chopping, mincing, slicing, etc.), washing plates and pans and every utensil I used, setting up the meals to look presentable for the photos while the family whines that everyone’s hungry and I’m taking forever mounting the camera on the tripod and taking multiple shots from every possible angle. There were times when I was so tired from cooking that my hands would shake while mounting the camera on the tripod. At least now I don’t have to do the washing part anymore.

Above are two of the recipes that will be included in the cookbook. I won’t tell you yet what they are. I mentioned before that I’m sticking to an all-Filipino theme. I am. But not Filipino dishes in the traditional way they are prepared. I mean, there must be hundreds of cookbooks out there with recipes for tinola and dinuguan and I won’t be contributing anything new if I just give readers and cooking enthusiasts the same things. Oh, no! I’m giving you new twists to old things and unexpected twists to new things. It’s going to be more like something old, something new, something learned and something totally radical.

So, that means the recipes won’t be divided into the usual pork, chicken, meat, rice, etc. categories. See, I want to highlight local produce. Hence, it will be more like “rice with gata recipes” or “cooking with cashew nuts”. And those are just a few. Why? Well, consider what the Italians have done for pasta and tomato sauce. I think I can do that with rice and gata, for instance. I can use that combination a dozen times if only to show that there is more to rice than steaming and sinangag. I can even use that combination with a variety of meat, seafood and vegetables and come up with another dozen or more new dishes. I know. It really sounds ambitious. And publishers aren’t exactly excited to try untested formulas. But let’s see what happens.

Anyway, I’m getting carried away. I might end up telling you everything now and leave no room for surprises. I just wanted to share with you how the cookbook project is going so far. :)

This would make a great pasalubong gift whenever I go back to NYC, but are the ingredients readily available abroad as well or just here at home?

Nonetheless, I’d want want for myself first :)

Can’t wait! I surely will be ordering at least one for myself, if not more, as gifts…one for my college-abound daughter, one for an ameripina girlfriend, a mexipina girlfriend, etc. As you can see, I’m excited to see a new twist given to our already fabulous filipino fare…ahem.

    Best wishes, Sas!

    Hi Connie,

Yes, thank the Lord you now have help. Mahirap talaga magluto tapos wash kaagad the utensils. Less manual load for you, the better for us your readers.

I am also eagerly waiting for your cookbook.

    Cheers!

i’m so looking forward to your cookbook. even before you mentioned about it, i was already sure it’s going to be something different as evidenced by the many remarkable recipes you have in this site. your deviation from a standard recipe book to one with a variation is a splendid and impressive undertaking. i wish you will also make one that’s for diabetics and hypertensives
i take my hat of to you! more power!
